The Pathologisation of Sexual Abuse – Masterclass

About the Masterclass

Too often, the impacts of sexual abuse are reframed as signs of “mental illness” instead of being understood as normal trauma responses. Survivors are labeled with diagnoses such as borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, or depression – labels that can obscure their experiences, undermine credibility, and prevent perpetrators from being held accountable.

This Masterclass challenges that pathologisation, showing practitioners how to adopt trauma-informed, anti-victim-blaming approaches in their work.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of how abuse survivors have been historically pathologised

  • Insight into the impact of psychiatric labels on justice, safeguarding, and recovery

  • Practical strategies to reframe casework through an anti-pathology lens

  • Tools to challenge systemic victim-blaming within your organisation
